Kinja is a small island in what is now the American Virgin Islands. Its official name is Amerigo Island but the inhabitants call it Kinja. The name Kinja is a creole corruption of King George. The United States maintained a presence on the island since 1911, in 1940 the island was purchased by the United States from Great Britain and it’s name was changed. The island was made famous by Norman Mailer in his book Don’t Stop the Carnival and by Jimmy Buffett in his musical by the same name.
